Where you deliver, and what it costs to get there

A real Clay site, built from a Google listing

The argument at the door is always about something that could have been one line on a page.

Takes less than a minute · no sign-up or credit card required

Delivery goes wrong in the same three places every time: they were outside the area, the order was under the minimum, or nobody mentioned the fee.

So the page names the streets or postcodes, states the minimum order and states the fee, before anybody puts anything in a basket. It also says how long, honestly, because a wrong estimate costs more than a slow one.

The three rules

Where, how much, and what it costs

Postcodes or street names, a minimum order, a delivery fee. If the fee changes with distance, say which ring is which rather than saying it depends.

The minimum is what people argue about, because they only meet it at checkout. On the page it is a fact; at the door it is a refund.

The time

An honest estimate beats a flattering one

Thirty five minutes that turns into fifty is a complaint. Fifty minutes that arrives in forty five is a good review, and it is the same kitchen.

Say what happens on a Friday at eight, when it is always longer. People forgive a queue they were warned about.

What you get

Streets, not a radius

People know their own street name and do not know how far two kilometres is.

The minimum, up front

It is a fact on the page and an argument at the door, and it is the same number.

An honest time

Fifty minutes that arrives in forty five beats thirty five that arrives in fifty.

Your photographs, already sorted

Clay reads the pictures on your Google listing, grades them, crops them for the shape each band needs and puts the best one at the top. Nothing to upload, nothing to resize.

Questions

Should I use a radius or street names?

Names. Nobody knows whether they are within two kilometres, and everybody knows what their street is called.

Where should the minimum order go?

On the delivery page and beside the basket. Discovered at checkout it is friction; discovered at the door it is a refund.

What if the fee varies by distance?

Say the rings and their prices. Depends on distance is the answer that gets a phone call.

Should I promise a delivery time?

Give an honest range and say when it is longer. Beating a cautious estimate is free goodwill.

Does Clay take the order and the payment?

The order comes to you as a message and the payment is settled how you already settle it: what a shop band adds.

What about the areas I do not cover?

Say collection only for those. It keeps the customer and loses only the delivery.

Can I change the area for one night?

Yes, it is a line on the page and it takes a minute from a phone, which is what you want when a driver calls in sick.
