What a web agency in Utrecht costs

An honest answer, the parts of the bill nobody quotes, and who should still hire one.

A real Clay site — built from a Google listing

The build is the half everybody compares. The half nobody prices is yours — a brief, rounds of notes, an afternoon spent finding photographs that are not already on Google — and it is all spent before anything is live. In Utrecht that time comes out of somebody who is also working the floor.

A small-business website built by people costs about €1,500 — designer €700 · developer €550 · copywriter €250 — and then a line every month for hosting and for somebody to change things. Clay is €49 a month for all of it, and you change things yourself.

The local picture

What you are actually buying

Utrecht is in the middle of the Dutch rail map, half an hour by train from Amsterdam, so a studio here can take Randstad work without leaving home — and a café's site sits in the same queue as it. The university keeps supplying new freelancers, so there is never a shortage of people to ask; what you are buying from any of them is a place in somebody's month.

When to hire one

This page is not for everybody

Hire one if what you sell is a term of passes at a bouldering hall, or a course people enrol in. That is a membership with logins and payments, and an agency builds it. Clay records a booking and takes no money; it has no events page. A café on Twijnstraat or a kitchen in Lombok needs none of that.

The bill nobody quotes

After launch

Utrecht's year is a university year. In July and August the students go home and the city empties, then September arrives all at once. Hold any monthly bill against that, ours included: it runs through the quiet months at the same price as the busy ones.

Questions

Is an agency ever the right answer?

Hire one if what you sell is a term of passes at a bouldering hall, or a course people enrol in. That is a membership with logins and payments, and an agency builds it. Clay records a booking and takes no money; it has no events page. A café on Twijnstraat or a kitchen in Lombok needs none of that.

What does an agency site actually cost in Utrecht?

We publish one figure and it is a European average for a small-business build: €1,500, made of designer €700 · developer €550 · copywriter €250. We are not going to invent a Utrecht number — ask two studios and you will have a real one in a day.

What is the part nobody quotes?

Changes. A new menu, a fourth photograph, a Sunday you decide to open. On an agency site each of those is somebody else's calendar and usually an invoice; over a year it is often more than the build. That is the line Clay is actually replacing.

What language will my site be in?

In Dutch, written in it rather than translated into it, because the business is in the Netherlands. A site is in one language: there is no switcher and no second version of a page.

Can I move to my own domain?

Yes, on the paid plan — and the free clay.site address keeps working afterwards, so anything already printed still lands: what free covers, and what it does not.
