What a web agency in Barcelona costs

An honest answer, the parts of the bill nobody quotes, and who should still hire one.

A real Clay site — built from a Google listing

A studio in Poblenou will send a proposal with design, build and the words on it, and every line of it is real work. The awkward part is what a bodega in Gràcia is buying with it. Its address, its hours, its photographs and its reviews already sit on Google, kept right because customers read them there. Part of the build is copying that across.

A small-business website built by people costs about €1,500 — designer €700 · developer €550 · copywriter €250 — and then a line every month for hosting and for somebody to change things. Clay is €49 a month for all of it, and you change things yourself.

The local picture

What you are actually buying

The thing a barrio place actually changes is the menú del migdia — a different lunch, chalked up in the morning, priced for the neighbourhood. On an agency site it almost never appears: the site was built as a brochure, the day's dishes go on the board and on Instagram, and within a year the page describes the place less accurately than the window does.

When to hire one

This page is not for everybody

Hire one if the site must be in Catalan: Clay writes in eight languages and Catalan is not among them, so a Barcelona site comes out in Spanish and stays there. Hire one for a booking system of your own design, a restaurant group under one brand, or a shop that takes card payments and ships.

The bill nobody quotes

After launch

The trade here has a season. A terrace in Sant Antoni takes most of its money between April and October, and that is exactly when the hours move, the kitchen closes later and there is something new to photograph. A fixed monthly bill is easy in July and heavy in February.

Questions

Is an agency ever the right answer?

Hire one if the site must be in Catalan: Clay writes in eight languages and Catalan is not among them, so a Barcelona site comes out in Spanish and stays there. Hire one for a booking system of your own design, a restaurant group under one brand, or a shop that takes card payments and ships.

What does an agency site actually cost in Barcelona?

We publish one figure and it is a European average for a small-business build: €1,500, made of designer €700 · developer €550 · copywriter €250. We are not going to invent a Barcelona number — ask two studios and you will have a real one in a day.

What is the part nobody quotes?

Changes. A new menu, a fourth photograph, a Sunday you decide to open. On an agency site each of those is somebody else's calendar and usually an invoice; over a year it is often more than the build. That is the line Clay is actually replacing.

What language will my site be in?

In Spanish, written in it rather than translated into it, because the business is in Spain. A site is in one language: there is no switcher and no second version of a page.

Can I move to my own domain?

Yes, on the paid plan — and the free clay.site address keeps working afterwards, so anything already printed still lands: what free covers, and what it does not.
