There is already a shelf behind your counter with three paper bags on it, each with a name written on the front. Somebody rang, or messaged, or asked yesterday afternoon. That is click and collect, and it has been running for years without a website.

Clay puts what you sell on your own page — photographs, prices and the choices that matter, sliced or whole, 250g or a kilo. A basket adds it up. The order button hands the lot to your WhatsApp as a written message, and you reply with the price and when it will be ready. Nothing is charged on the page, and the page says so.

What reaches you

A message, not an order screen

It carries the quantities, the product names and the options they picked. It does not carry a total, and there is no order dashboard of ours for you to remember to open — the whole thing lands in the same thread your regulars already message you in.

Which means no collection-time picker either. They say Thursday, or you do, the way it gets settled now. A slot chosen on a website is a promise the bag is ready; the shelf is the only thing that makes it true.

Questions

How long does it really take?

Most people are live in two to three minutes — search your business, pick a style, publish. There is nothing to install and no signup needed to see your site first, because it is built from your Google listing rather than from a blank page.

Is it free?

Yes. You get a live site on your own name.clay.site address with a small badge in the footer, and nothing expires. The paid plan is your own domain, the badge removed and the pro features.

Do I need any tech skills?

None. If you can type your business name, you can build a Clay site: the live page is the editor, so you tap the thing you want to change. There is no code anywhere, and nothing to install or keep updated — see the WordPress comparison for what that saves.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes — buy it wherever you like and point it at Clay on a paid plan; the certificate is issued for you. Until then the free name.clay.site address is a real one you can print, and it keeps working afterwards.

Can they pay for it when they order?

No. There is no card checkout for products on Clay, anywhere. The basket writes the order out and hands it over, and you take the money at the counter the way you take it now. The only card payments in Clay are for Clay itself: what the shop does and does not do.

Can they choose a collection time?

No. There is no slot picker on a shop and the basket does not talk to a diary — the time is agreed in your reply. If picking a time is the thing you actually sell, that is booking, which is a separate paid feature and does not carry a basket.

What stops two people ordering the last one?

Nothing, and you want to know that before you print the sign. Stock is a yes or a no rather than a count, and nothing is held when somebody adds to the basket. A sold-out product also still shows an Add button on the shop grid — it only says Sold out on its own page.

A product that has gone keeps its page and says so where the Add button was, and the structured data says out of stock too.

It goes to your number

The order arrives on the phone the site already lists. Nothing of ours sits in between and there is nothing extra to log into.
