Boat hire

Hire out your boats by the half-day

A real Clay site — built from a Google listing

A sloop that goes out at nine and again at half past one is not a night's rental, and the diary should know it.

Takes less than a minute · no sign-up or credit card required

A boat hire does not sell nights. It sells the morning, the afternoon and the two hours before sunset, and the same sloop can go out three times on one Saturday.

Clay takes both shapes on one control: a block is a length of time at a price, a longer hire is priced by the day, the week or the month. The page itself is free and lives at a real address; taking bookings on it is the one paid plan, €49 a month ex-VAT.

How a boat hire differs

The unit is a block

A rental engine thinks in whole days. It takes a first day and a last day and multiplies, which is right for a week on a canal boat and wrong for a sloop that leaves at nine, is back by one and goes out again at half past.

So a half-day is set up as a length of time at a price — 09:00, four hours, one number — and four sloops means four parties can take that same nine o'clock. The fifth is refused rather than taken and apologised for.

Where it stops

The licence, the deposit, the wind

Clay does not check a licence and does not want a photograph of one — nothing in the product collects or stores a document. The note box on the booking is free text, so you can ask for a number and read it in your email, but treat it as a message. The check happens on the pontoon.

No money is taken either. There is no card capture anywhere in the booking, and on a hire there is not even a deposit field — that box is drawn only for a restaurant's large tables. Put the amount in the price line and take it when they step aboard.

And when Tuesday blows out, you block the day so nothing new lands on it and you ring the two who already booked. Nobody can move a booking — there is no reschedule button — so a change is a cancellation and a fresh booking.

Questions

Can I sell a morning and an afternoon on the same boat?

Yes, but not as a rental — a rental is priced by the day, the week or the month and blocks every day it covers. A block is an appointment instead: a length of time at a price, with how many boats you have as one number, so four parties can take the same nine o'clock. More on that shape on appointment booking.

Do you check licences, or store a copy of one?

No. Nothing in Clay collects, stores or checks a document, and the booking has no upload of any kind. The note box is free text, so you can ask for a licence number and read it in the email you get — but that is a message, not a check, and the real one happens when they turn up.

Can I take a deposit when somebody books?

Not on a hire. No money is taken anywhere in Clay's booking, and the deposit field is only drawn for a restaurant's large parties — see table booking. State the amount in the price line and on the page, and take it in person, the way you take it now.

What happens when the wind gets up on Tuesday?

You block the day, which stops anything new landing on it, and you ring the two who already booked. There is no reschedule, no reminder and no waitlist: moving a booking means cancelling it and taking it again. How much notice a customer needs to cancel is yours to set, and you are never bound by your own rule.

Can I close a day when the forecast turns?

Yes — block it, and it stops being offered for everything at once. It is a day-level answer, not a per-boat one, so a morning you would still run has to come off too. For a hire that lives or dies on the wind that is worth knowing before you set it up.

What you get

Blocks and whole days

A block is a length of time at a price. A hire by the day, the week or the month multiplies instead. Same feature, one control.

How many you have

Four kayaks means four can be out at once, and the day goes full when the last one is gone — not before.

Time between hires

Set the turnaround once — fuel, hose down, life jackets — and the diary stops offering the slot that would eat it.

Every booking, in your inbox

The name, the phone number and whatever they typed in the note. Hitting Reply reaches the person, not us.

What the booking actually does

Half-day blocks, priced as a length of time
Day, week and month rates for a longer hire
Your fleet count honoured, so the fifth party is refused
A turnaround gap between one hire and the next
Blocked days for weather, servicing and holidays
Every booking on the calendar you already use, one way out
