Portfolio

A portfolio, and only your best twelve

A real Clay site, built from a Google listing

Nobody is counting. They are looking for a reason to stop, and the weakest picture gives them one.

Takes less than a minute · no sign-up or credit card required

A portfolio is the only kind of page where more work makes it worse. Sixty pictures means a client sees your sixtieth best, and that is the one they remember.

So the page is a set of your strongest work, sized and compressed on the way in so it opens on a phone in a car park. Under it goes what you actually do and what a job starts at, because a portfolio with no prices generates a lot of admiring emails and not much work.

The edit

Twelve, not sixty

Choose the twelve you would want to be hired for and delete the rest from the page. The others still exist; they just do not need to be the first impression.

Group them if the work splits genuinely, weddings and portraits, interiors and product. Two coherent sets beat one long mixed scroll.

What it costs to start

A starting figure, or a range for a typical job. Somebody with a budget of four hundred and somebody with four thousand are both wasting your time until they know.

And say what you do, plainly. A page of beautiful photographs with no sentence saying what you photograph is a page people admire and leave.

What you get

Sized on the way in

Every picture compressed and resized when you upload it, so the page opens on a phone.

Your best twelve

The page is judged by the weakest picture on it, which is an argument for a shorter page.

A starting figure

A range for a typical job stops the enquiries that were never going to book.

Questions

How many pictures should be on it?

About twelve. The page is judged by the weakest one, so every extra picture is a risk rather than a gain.

Should I split into galleries?

Only if the work genuinely splits. Two clear sets read better than one mixed scroll, and four thin ones read worse than either.

Do I need prices?

A starting figure saves you the enquiries that were never going to book, and gets you the ones that were.

What about big files?

They are resized and compressed when you upload them, so a page of full resolution photographs is not what the visitor downloads.

Can clients enquire from it?

Yes, and the form should be short: what the contact page carries.

Does it work for other trades?

Yes, and for some it works better as a before and after: the before and after gallery.

How often should I change it?

Whenever something better than the weakest one on it exists. That is the only rule the page needs.
