Gift cards

A gift card page, on your own site

A real Clay site, built from a Google listing

Somebody wants to give your shop as a present and cannot work out how. That is the entire problem, and it is a page.

Takes less than a minute · no sign-up or credit card required

Every December a lot of people decide to buy somebody a voucher for a place they like, and then spend ten minutes failing to find out whether that place does one.

So the gift card gets a page: what it is, what amounts you do, how it arrives and how long it lasts. The order comes to you as a message and the payment is settled the way you already settle payments, which is why there is nothing per card and nothing held anywhere.

The page

Four things a buyer needs before they ask

Amounts, whether it is a card or an email, how long it is valid and whether it can be spent on anything. Those four are the whole conversation and they fit above the fold.

Say what it looks like. A photograph of the actual card in a hand is worth more than the word gift card written four times.

The order

It comes to you, not through us

Somebody picks an amount and sends the order; it arrives as a message with their name and what they want on it. You take the payment however you already do.

That is why there is no fee per card and no float sitting with a platform. It also means the card is your promise, on your terms, which is what a gift card legally is anyway.

What you get

Amounts you choose

Three or four fixed ones and an anything option. More than that and people stop deciding.

Say how long it lasts

The expiry is the question you get asked most and the one most gift card pages leave out.

The order is a message

Name, amount, and whether it is posted or emailed. You reply and settle it however suits you.

Your photographs, already sorted

Clay reads the pictures on your Google listing, grades them, crops them for the shape each band needs and puts the best one at the top. Nothing to upload, nothing to resize.

Questions

Does Clay take the payment?

No. The order comes to you as a message and you settle it the way you already take money, which is why there is nothing per card.

What amounts should I offer?

Three or four, plus an open one. A long list of amounts makes the buyer think about money instead of about the present.

Card or email?

Offer both if you can and say which is which on the page. A card in an envelope is a better present and an email arrives on the twenty fourth.

How long should it be valid?

Whatever your law allows and you can honour. Say the number on the page: it is the most asked question and the most commonly missing answer.

Can I sell gift cards and products together?

Yes, the same page can carry both: what a shop band adds.

What about a business buying twenty?

That is an enquiry rather than an order, and the message box handles it. Say on the page that you do them.

Do I need to print anything?

Only if you want a physical card. Plenty of shops write the amount on a nice card by hand, and it photographs better than a printed one.
